Project end results and achievements
In this project, running from May 2022 to June 2025, the Danish Geodata Agency (DGA) has been focusing on enhancing navigational safety on Lake Volta through satellite technology and crowd-sourced data collection. Throughout the project, DGA has worked together with Danish and Ghanaian project partners and stakeholders to test new technologies that can aid the seafarers on Lake Volta.
The project was concluded with a workshop in Accra, Ghana, in May 2025 with training in tools, capacity development and fruitful discussions on the use of an e-navigation platform.
Key Outcomes
- Comprehensive hazard maps identifying dangers to navigation in a pilot area.
- Proven crowd-sourced data collection methodology on vessels operating on the lake.
- Successfully collected 1.4+ million data points during the project.
- Ensured sustainable knowledge transfer to Ghana Maritime Authority through targeted capacity building initiatives, including training and utilizing open-source tools.
Project summary
GST’s activities primarily include the following:
- Crowdsourced Data Collection – Development and testing of methods to collect data from vessels. This is a highly effective method since vessels already routinely operate on Lake Volta. The methods are initially tested in Danish waters, after which data is collected from vessels on Lake Volta for a longer period.
- Satellite-Based Identification of Hazards – In pilot areas on Lake Volta, satellite technologies and geospatial analyses are used to identify areas and trees that may pose a hazard to navigation on the lake.
The data and results obtained provide end users with crucial information about navigational risks and support capacity building. Furthermore, the results enable the Danish Geodata Agency to better understand the benefits and limitations of crowdsourced data collection and satellite technologies.
The project is part of a broader maritime sector cooperation between Denmark and Ghana – “Maritime Strategic Sector Cooperation between Denmark and Ghana – Phase 3”, running from 1 May 2022 to 30 June 2025.
