2025 ENC production for Greenland released: New nautical charts for three key areas

16-12-2025

The Danish Geodata Agency has completed the 2025 production of electronic navigational charts (ENC) for Greenland. With the final charts completed at the end of November 2025, new and updated ENC coverage is now available through the agency’s official distributors. Produced through close Danish–Greenlandic cooperation, the charts provide a more accurate and detailed navigational basis for waters around Upernavik, Uummannaq and Sisimiut.

The Danish Geodata Agency has now finalised the 2025 ENC production for Greenland. The work has been carried out within the framework of the agreement with the Government of Greenland, and all agreed ENC products for 2025 have now been released via the Danish Geodata Agencys official distributors. The new and updated charts support a robust navigational foundation in some of Greenland’s most heavily trafficked waters.

New data transformed into more detailed nautical charts

In 2025, priority has been given to new ENC coverage in the areas around the towns of Upernavik, Uummannaq and Sisimiut. Newly acquired hydrographic survey data, a more detailed coastline, and an increased number of recorded rocks and shallow waters have now been incorporated into the ENC’s.

“This year’s ENC production incorporates the available surveys and data from the areas that are now covered by electronic navigational charts. This helps provide users with a more up-to-date and detailed navigational and data foundation for sailing in the affected waters,” says Allan Idd Jensen, Head of Divisoin at the Danish Geodata Agency.

Flexible production and continuous release

The production of ENC’s for Greenland is carried out within the framework of the current agreement between Greenland and Denmark, which sets the overall direction for nautical charting activities. As individual charts have been completed, they have been made available on an ongoing basis through the Danish Geodata Agency’s official distributors. With the completion of the final products of the year, the entire 2025 production has now been released, and the latest surveys and data have been converted into updated ENCs for the covered areas.

Cooperation agreement: from paper charts to digital ENCs

In 2024, the Danish Geodata Agency and the Government of Greenland revised their joint agreement from 2009 on the production of nautical charts for Greenland. With the revision, the focus shifted from paper charts to electronic navigational charts (ENC), enabling production to be better aligned with the current needs of Greenlandic users.

The transition to ENCs provides greater flexibility to prioritise charting where the need is greatest – both in areas with new or improved hydrographic surveys and in waters where there is particularly high demand. The objective is a more needs-driven and modern chart production that supports navigational safety and the effective utilisation of new hydrographic data.
