Transition to continuous publication of nautical chart corrections

05-03-2025

From 1 April 2025, the Danish Geodata Agency will introduce a new format for the publication of nautical chart corrections. This marks a transition to continuous publication in a more simplified format. The change is being implemented alongside the introduction of a Print-on-Demand (POD) solution for paper nautical charts.

In April 2025, the Danish Geodata Agency will discontinue its weekly publication: Chart Corrections. Going forward, nautical chart corrections will instead be published continuously on the website www.gst.dk. The format will transition to compiling nautical chart corrections for each chart into a single file. This makes it easier for users to find all corrections for the respective chart. In addition, changes are also being made to descriptions, in that chart blocks and plans will no longer be used. Instead, descriptions will be exclusively text-based and in English. This change is being made in connection with the transition to a Print on Demand solution for paper nautical charts, which you can read more about in the article here.

Changes to the format for nautical chart corrections:

  • Nautical chart corrections are still available via the ‘Chart by Chart’ page on www.gst.dk.
  • The format is being changed to a single file containing all accumulated corrections for each chart.
  • Chart blocks and plans will no longer be used. Correction descriptions will be entirely text-based and in English.
  • This change aligns with the transition to a Print on Demand (POD) solution for paper nautical charts and will help to ensure the more flexible and efficient distribution of updated charts.

The current format for nautical chart corrections is a single document containing the last week’s corrections to multiple charts. It is available on the Danish Geodata Agency's website. The corrections are described using text, symbols, positions or via chart blocks and plans. This document has been published every Wednesday with descriptions of the corrections in both Danish and English.

The future format will publish corrections on an on-going basis per chart on the Danish Geodata Agency's website. All corrections will be described via text and positions. Chart blocks, plans and symbols will no longer be used. If a correction cannot be described in text, the chart will be updated and a new edition will be made available. Users should be aware that chart corrections are generalised in that chart corrections are described for charts at the largest scale.

About Chart Corrections

Up-to-date nautical charts are essential for safe navigation. Users of paper charts should always use the latest editions and update them regularly with relevant corrections. Chart corrections contain descriptions of the corrections that need to be added to the paper charts in order to update the paper charts over the waters around Denmark and Greenland.

For the majority of chart corrections, the source is Danish Notices to Mariners (Efterretninger for Søfarende). A smaller number of corrections originate from sources like ports, contractors, cable owners, and others.

Paper charts are, upon their publication, corrected up to and including the chart correction number indicated in the lower left corner of the chart. When acquiring a paper chart, users should be aware that any corrections released after the specified chart correction number must be manually added to the paper chart by the user.
