The Danish Geodata Agency launches digital solution: Nautical chart of the future is just a print away

02-04-2025

As of today, seafarers will be able to order updated paper nautical charts exactly when they need them. With the Danish Geodata Agency's new Print-on-Demand solution, a significant step is being taken towards a more flexible and digital future.

The solution means that paper nautical charts no longer need to be printed in large quantities and stored, but are instead produced on demand – always with the latest updates. This ensures that each chart ordered is fully updated with the most recent information on waters and navigational conditions.

Alongside the launch of Print-on-Demand, the Danish Geodata Agency is also introducing a new approach to chart updates. Previously, updates were published weekly, but they will now be released continuously. This change ensures that seafarers will always have access to the most accurate and up-to-date data, perfectly complementing the Print-on-Demand model and ensuring that each chart reflects the latest available information.

Initially, continuous updates via the Print-on-Demand solution will be available for charts of Danish waters. During 2025, the system will be expanded to include Greenlandic waters, providing even more seafarers with access to the most up-to-date paper charts.

Order updated charts directly from retailers

Charts can now be ordered through authorised retailers' digital platforms, making it easier than ever to access the latest updates. Several retailers already offer Print-on-Demand, with more expected to join soon.

One of the retailers providing this service is Weilbach, a leading supplier of maritime printed products. The Danish Geodata Agency values the collaboration with Weilbach, which not only makes it possible to quickly bring the solution to users but also contributes to the continued development of digital navigation solutions.

"We are pleased to collaborate with the Danish Geodata Agency on this innovative solution, which makes it easier for our customers to access updated nautical charts. Print-on-Demand offers greater flexibility, increased navigational safety and supports a more sustainable production approach. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Danish Geodata Agency in developing future digital solutions", says Torben Frerks, CEO, Weilbach A/S - Weilbach Group.

A digital mindset driving smarter solutions

Through this initiative, the Danish Geodata Agency is not only modernising the production of paper nautical charts for Danish and Greenlandic waters but also embracing the digital wave that enables smarter, more flexible and sustainable solutions. Print-on-Demand is a clear example of how digitalisation can improve service, reduce waste and ensure that both Danish and international seafarers will always be able to access to the most up-to-date data.

"This is about more than just charts. It's about rethinking processes and using digital solutions to create more efficient and user-friendly products. The future of maritime navigation is digital, but we recognise that many seafarers still rely on paper nautical charts. With Print-on-Demand we combine the best of both worlds”, says Elizabeth Hagemann, Head of Strategy Division at the Danish Geodata Agency.

A future-proof solution for the maritime sector

The maritime sector is undergoing a digital transformation, with both data and navigation solutions becoming increasingly dynamic. The Danish Geodata Agency plays a central role in this development by continuously implementing digital initiatives that strengthen safety at sea and improve navigation efficiency.

"This is another step forward in our commitment to providing modern, up-to-date solutions for maritime Denmark. We innovate because it is necessary - and because it delivers value for sailors, authorities and the industry", adds Allan Idd Jensen, Head of Nautical Charts and Systems Division at the Danish Geodata Agency.

With Print-on-Demand and the new continuous update model for nautical charts, the Danish Geodata Agency is moving towards a smarter, more digital future—benefiting both the seafarers of today and those of the future.
